The Nevada State Museum and Historical Society
When you see the fabulous Las Vegas, the so-called Sin City where all your dreams could come true, do you ever stop and think about its history? Well, if you are interested in the history of the state of Nevada, then we invite you to the Nevada State Museum and Historical Society, located in Lorenzi Park, near downtown.
This institution gathers information about Nevada's history, interprets it, preserves and exhibits the state's heritage, passing it on to the next generations. The museum features exhibitions about Native American arts, the Nevada history, natural history and pre-history, the Mohave Dessert and many others.
Some exhibits are permanent, such as the Biological Sciences exhibit (featuring one of Nevada's symbols, the mountain sheep), the Earth Sciences Gallery and the Regional School exhibit. The Earth Sciences Gallery's main attraction is a 225 million years old fossil discovered in the state of Nevada, belonging to the Triassic Period. It is the ichthyosaur Shonisaurus popularis, the largest ichthyosaur that was ever found. The exhibit also features the Columbian Mammoth, a species that disappeared about 20, 000 years ago.
Other exhibits are temporary, as for example the exhibit called 100 Years of Las Vegas Images- Bats! Champions of the Night Sky. This interactive exhibit features bats from all over the world and especially 8 species of bats from Nevada: the Big Brown Bat, the Pallid Bat, the Mexican or Brazilian Free-tailed Bat, the Western Pipistrelle, the Townsend's Big-eared Bat, the California Myotis, the Fringed Myotis and the Long-legged Myotis. Another changing exhibit presents the amazing story of Bugsy Siegel and his Flamingo Hotel.
The Nevada State Museum and Historical Society also offers school tours, Traveling History Trunks, books and toys for children, maps, manuscripts and newspapers about the history of Nevada and Las Vegas in particular, workshops for children and grown-ups and research services. You may visit the museum daily between 9 am and 5 pm, except for Christmas, the New Year's Day and Thanksgiving Day. If you are less than 18 years old, then the museum offers you free admission.
